Chapter 15 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

While the corporate war was won, David found himself fighting a quieter, internal battle.

Despite his sudden wealth and restored family name, David spent his evenings walking through the quiet halls of the grand estate, feeling an underlying sense of unease. For twenty-six years, he had lived as an outcast, fighting for basic survival. Returning to high society felt like wearing a suit that didn't belong to him.

One evening, while cleaning out the basement archives of the estate, David stumbled upon a locked wooden chest marked with his mother’s initials: E.V.

Using a brass key Eleanor had given him, David turned the lock and opened the lid. Inside were hundreds of letters—unopened, stamped, and return-addressed to state social services, private investigator agencies, and orphanage directorates across five different states.

Every single letter was dated between 1998 and 2010, written in Eleanor’s sharp, elegant handwriting, begging for any information regarding her missing six-year-old boy.

David picked up a letter from 2004, his eyes scanning the faded ink:

May you like

"To whom it may concern: I do not care what the custody records state. My son David was stolen from me while I was incapacitated. I will search every city, every system, every corner of this country until I draw my last breath...

Tears blurred David’s vision as he held the paper against his chest. All those years in foster care, feeling abandoned and forgotten by a mother he thought didn't care, dissolved in an instant. She had never stopped fighting for him. Not even for a day.
