Chapter 19 - THE PAIR THAT FOUND ITS HOME

Two years later.

It was a quiet, warm winter evening at the Vance Estate.

A crackling fire burned brightly in the living room fireplace, casting a golden light across the hardwood floors and cozy leather armchairs. Soft snow fell silently against the windowpanes outside.

Lily, now nine years old, sat on the plush rug near the hearth, working on a large jigsaw puzzle. Nearby, David was sitting on the sofa, reviewing the foundation’s annual medical grant reports, looking completely at peace.

Eleanor sat in her wheelchair by the fire, holding a mug of warm tea.

On the mantelpiece above the fireplace, framed in a shadow box made of polished mahogany, sat the two hand-knitted blue mittens. Side by side, their frayed white snowflake patterns matched perfectly, illuminated by the flickering warm firelight.

Lily looked up from her puzzle, staring at the framed mittens on the mantelpiece.

"Dad?" Lily asked softly.

"Yeah, sweetie?" David looked up from his paperwork.

"Are those mittens ever going to get lost again?"

David walked over, crouching down next to his daughter and pulling her into a gentle side-hug. He looked up at the mantelpiece, then turned to his mother, who smiled back at him with pure love.

"No, Lily," David whispered softly, kissing the top of her head. "They found their way back to each other. They're home now."

The wind whistled softly outside the window, but inside the house, bathed in warm light and unbroken love, the Vance family was safe, whole, and together at last.
