Chapter 16 - The Unclaimed Key

Later that afternoon, while federal auditors cataloged the estate’s endless vaults, Thomas—the elderly head butler—knocked softly on the door of the private study and handed Margaret a heavy, unlabelled brass key.
“What is this, Thomas?” Margaret asked, examining the cold metal.
“Your father asked me to keep it safe the night he fell ill,” Thomas replied, his voice trembling slightly with age and emotion. “He said if the house ever fell into the wrong hands, and the truth ever came to light, this key would open the vault beneath the old boathouse. He called it the origin. He warned me that whatever is inside isn't just money or papers... it’s the original charter of the family trust.”
Margaret and Elena exchanged a quiet, questioning glance. Accompanied by Thomas, they walked down the winding stone path toward the dilapidated wooden boathouse at the edge of the misty lake.
The air grew damp and heavy as they descended the moss-covered concrete steps leading beneath the water level. Margaret inserted the heavy brass key into the rusted padlock of an iron-reinforced door hidden behind rotting fishing nets.
