Pushed hard down the stone steps into the dark, damp wine cellar beneath the ballroom, Margaret and Elena hit the floor as the heavy oak door slammed shut above them, the deadbolt shooting home with a heavy, final thud.

Pitch blackness enveloped them, broken only by a single sliver of moonlight filtering through a high, barred window near the ceiling.

“Are you alright?” Margaret whispered, crawling through the dust to find her sister.

“He thinks he won,” Margaret whispered in the dark, a fierce, cold resolve replacing her fear. “He has the shell, but we have the truth.”

Outside, high above the cellar, muffled music continued to play from the ballroom—oblivious to the war brewing beneath their feet. Margaret looked up toward the barred window, knowing that the battle for their family's survival was only just beginning, and the dawn would bring either absolute justice or their final silence.
