Chapter 9 - The Legacy of Thomas

With trembling fingers, Margaret inserted the heavy brass key into the iron padlock of the inner maintenance hatch tucked away in the darkest corner of the cellar. The mechanism gave way with a muffled click, swinging open to reveal a narrow, brick-lined utility tunnel that snaked its way beneath the foundations of the ballroom toward the old boathouse on the lake.

“Thomas hasn’t forgotten whose blood runs through these halls,” Elena murmured, a glimmer of profound relief washing over her scarred face as she stared down into the dark opening. “He was the only one who tried to warn me the night the fire started. He risked everything just by leaving us this key.”

“We can’t run away, Elena,” Margaret said firmly, her voice dropping to a fierce, unyielding register that surprised even herself. For twenty years, she had lived the life of a wealthy corporate executive, conditioned to play by the rules of boardrooms and legal contracts. But standing here in the dark, looking at the sister who had been robbed of her entire existence, the gentle socialite was entirely gone. In her place stood a mother and a sister driven by an absolute, terrifying hunger for justice. “If we run, Arthur wins. He keeps the estate, he keeps the patents, and he buries our family history forever. We have to take him down right here, tonight, while the whole elite of the city is gathered under his roof.”

Elena stared at her twin, the hollow terror in her eyes slowly shifting into a spark of fierce, ancestral defiance. “Then we finish what our father started.”
