Chapter 7 - The Whispers in the Dark

The heavy oak door of the cellar slammed shut, sealing off the last remnants of light and warmth from the grand estate above. Silence descended upon the damp stone walls, thick and suffocating, broken only by the rhythmic, shallow breathing of the two sisters huddled in the corner. For twenty long years, Margaret had mourned an empty casket, believing that the ashes buried beneath the family monument belonged to the twin who had shared her childhood secrets. Now, sitting on the freezing floor with her back pressed against the unyielding stone, the phantom ache of grief was replaced by a sharp, electric terror that pulsed through her veins.

“He didn’t check the lining, Elena,” Margaret whispered into the pitch blackness, her voice trembling as she carefully extended her clenched fist. She caught her sister’s cold, calloused fingers and pressed the tiny, razor-thin micro-SD card into her palm. “When the guard ripped the locket away, my thumb found the secondary release. Everything Arthur built, everything he stole from our father... it’s all right here on this sliver of plastic.”

Elena’s hand closed over the card with a desperate, crushing intensity. In the faint sliver of moonlight filtering through the high, barred window, Margaret could see the faint outline of her twin’s face, etched with the weathered lines of a woman who had spent two decades living as a ghost in the shadows of the world.

“You don’t know Arthur, Maggie,” Elena replied, her voice breaking into a raspy, haunted whisper. “He isn’t just a corporate thief. He’s a monster who spent twenty years perfecting the art of erasure. If he realizes this card is missing—even if he thinks it’s destroyed—he won’t just kill us. He will burn this entire estate to the ground with everyone inside it, just to ensure no living soul ever whispers our family name again.”
