Chapter 2 - THE HOSTILE INHERITANCE

The song ended on a sustained, haunting minor chord that echoed through the high ceilings.
Nobody clapped. Nobody moved.
"Julian..." whisper-talk erupted among the senior board members standing near the champagne fountain. "Is that... Elena's daughter?"
Julian’s father, the tyrannical patriarch Marcus Sterling, pushed through the crowd with his silver-headed cane. His face was a mask of thunderous fury as he glared at the girl in the wheelchair.
"Security," Marcus commanded, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "Escort this child and her handler off the premises immediately. She is trespassing on private property."
"She stays," Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register that silenced his father instantly.
Julian dropped to one knee beside the wheelchair, his broad shoulders trembling under his tuxedo jacket. For the first time in twelve years, the arrogant, ruthless corporate prince looked completely undone.
"What is your name?" Julian whispered, his hands hovering near hers, afraid to touch her as if she were made of glass.
"Maya," the twelve-year-old girl replied quietly. "Maya Sterling-Vane."
Marcus slammed his cane against the marble floor. "She has no right to that name! Elena Vane signed a legal waiver twelve years ago! She took five hundred thousand dollars to relinquish all claims to the Sterling estate!"
Maya reached into the small canvas bag hanging from her wheelchair armrest. She didn't pull out a lawsuit, or a demand for money.

She pulled out a yellowed piece of paper—a bank receipt showing that the five hundred thousand dollars had been deposited into a sealed charitable trust on the exact day it was given, untouched for twelve years, accruing interest for a single purpose.
"My mother didn't keep your money, Mr. Sterling," Maya said, her dark eyes locking onto the old patriarch. "She used it to buy twenty percent of Sterling Enterprises' public shares when your stock crashed during the five-year audit."
