Chapter 7 - THE BOARDROOM SHOWDOWN

By 8:15 AM, the 40th-floor boardroom of Sterling Enterprises was suffocatingly tense. Fifteen executive directors sat around the polished mahogany table, whispering anxiously among themselves.

At the head of the table sat Marcus Sterling, looking cold and triumphant.

"Directors," Marcus declared, slamming his fist onto the table. "This circus ends now. Under Section 4 of the corporate bylaws, a minor cannot exercise voting rights on a major trust without an appointed corporate guardian. I move that the board appoint me as temporary trustee of The Winter Trust."

"Motion denied," a voice rang out from the doorway.

The heavy double doors swung open. Julian pushed Maya’s wheelchair into the room, followed by two senior federal court auditors and Sarah carrying a stack of sealed legal binders.

"On what grounds, Julian?" Marcus sneered. "You don't have the authority to deny a board motion!"

Maya reached into her canvas bag and produced a signed, notarized court document stamped by the Chief Family Court Judge just thirty minutes prior.

"On the grounds of emancipation and court-appointed legal advocacy," Maya said, her young voice ringing through the silent room. "My mother appointed Julian Sterling as my sole personal legal guardian in the event of her death. Which means he holds my voting proxy—not you, Mr. Sterling."

Marcus’s jaw worked silently as the color drained from his face.

Julian stepped to the head of the table, placing his hands flat on the mahogany surface, staring directly into his father's eyes.

"And with Maya’s twenty percent combined with my own twenty-five percent," Julian announced, "we hold forty-five percent of voting shares. More than enough to block your motion—and call for an immediate vote of no confidence."
