Chapter 1 - THE SHADOW IN THE HALLWAY

The golden light of dusk bled through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Carter home, casting long, peaceful amber rays across the polished hardwood floors of the upscale suburban living room.
On the surface, everything about the house spoke of warmth, comfort, and quiet wealth. A brick fireplace stood along the north wall, flanked by family photos in silver frames. Scattered across the woven cream rug were children's building blocks, a half-finished puzzle, and a small pink hair bow.
But the warmth was an illusion.
Inside the quiet room, a terrifying confrontation erupted in absolute violence.
Vanessa Reed—late 30s, tall and slender with sharp, severe features, her auburn hair pulled back into a tightly bound knot—moved across the hardwood with cold, methodical malice. Her green eyes were flat, devoid of any human empathy as she wore a rust-colored jumpsuit and black ankle boots that clicked sharply against the floor.
Vanessa snatched five-year-old Lily Carter by the ankle.
Lily—tiny, fragile, with shoulder-length light-brown hair and tearful hazel eyes—screamed as her little body was dragged backward across the floorboards, her pale-yellow dress bunching around her waist, her small hands clutching her stuffed rabbit in pure panic.
"NOAH!" Lily shrieked, her voice cracking in terror.
From across the room, seven-year-old Noah—small and thin, with messy dark-blond hair and frightened blue eyes—hurtled forward without a moment's hesitation. He threw his frail body over his little sister, wrapping his small arms tightly around her chest.
"LET HER GO!" Noah screamed, his small chest heaving.
Vanessa’s expression didn't flinch. With a contemptuous sneer, she grabbed Noah by the back of his navy T-shirt collar, yanking him free with brutal force, and hurled him hard onto the cream leather sofa. Before Lily could crawl away, Vanessa grabbed her by the hem of her dress, dragging her back.
Instantly, Noah leaped off the cushions, placing his thin frame directly between Vanessa and his little sister. He stood tall, his legs shaking, his eyes wet with tears as he spread his arms wide.
"GO THROUGH ME FIRST!" Noah cried out, his voice trembling but unyielding.
Vanessa’s cold green eyes flashed with sudden, cruel irritation. She reached down beside the fireplace hearth and lifted a heavy wooden baseball bat high into the air, her knuckles whitening as she raised the weapon over the child's head.
