Chapter 9 - THE FORENSIC RECORD

At 6:00 AM, as cold gray daylight broke over the wet suburban neighborhood, a discreet silver sedan pulled into the Carter driveway.
Dr. Aris Thorne—a quiet, middle-aged woman with silver hair and a sharp, professional demeanor—stepped into the living room carrying a black leather medical case. Beside her stood Marcus Miller, Ethan’s long-time family attorney.
Vanessa emerged from the guest suite wearing her rust-colored jumpsuit, her auburn hair immaculately tied back. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw the attorney and the medical examiner standing near the fireplace.
"What is the meaning of this?" Vanessa demanded, her green eyes flashing with instant fury. "Marcus, you have no standing in this residence! I am the court-appointed estate supervisor—"
"You were the supervisor, Vanessa," Marcus interrupted smoothly, opening a thick leather briefcase. "Until fifty minutes ago, when we filed an emergency injunction with Judge Abernathy regarding child endangerment and physical abuse."
Vanessa’s face turned pale, but she recovered quickly, pointing a manicured finger at Ethan. "He's lying! He made those kids lie to protect himself! I never laid a hand on those children!"
Dr. Thorne walked calmly down the stairs, carrying a digital medical camera and a high-resolution lighting tool.
"I have just documented a fresh, fourth-degree subcutaneous tissue contusion on five-year-old Lily Carter’s left ankle," Dr. Thorne said, her voice dry, precise, and devastatingly objective. "The width, pressure points, and finger spacing match an adult hand grip with ninety-nine percent forensic probability. The injury occurred within the last eighteen hours."

Vanessa took a sharp, reflexive step back. "That... that could have happened on the playground!"
"And the thick leather belt recovered from beneath the sofa," Marcus added, pulling a sealed evidence bag from his briefcase, "has been swabbed for latent DNA. We'll have the lab results before the judge takes the bench at nine."
