Chapter 11 - THE EVENING STORM
By Friday evening, a relentless gale hammered the suburban neighborhood, bending the tall oaks on the front lawn and lashing heavy rain against the glass.
Inside the Carter home, the atmosphere had shifted from immediate panic to a cautious, fragile peace. The county sheriff’s protection order hung prominently near the front door, and the local precinct had agreed to run periodic drive-bys along the avenue.
Upstairs in the nursery, Lily sat on the plush rug, her small face lit with a bright smile as she brushed the fur of her stuffed rabbit. Her bruised left ankle was wrapped securely in a clean elastic bandage. Beside her, Noah was meticulously stacking building blocks, his dark-blond hair falling over his forehead, his blue eyes no longer shadowed by panic.
Ethan sat in the doorway, his tall frame propped against the wooden frame. He wore his usual blue denim shirt over the olive-green Henley, his worn boots resting on the carpet edge. His rugged face softened as he watched his children laugh freely for the first time in weeks.
Suddenly, the house went pitch black.
The warm glow of the lamps vanished. The hum of the refrigerator died, and the digital clock on the bedside table flickered into nothingness.
Outside, the streetlights along the block remained brightly lit.
Noah froze mid-reach, his hand hovering over his block tower. "Dad?" he whispered, his small voice instantly tightening with familiar dread. "Did the lights go out?"
Ethan stood up slowly, his broad shoulders blocking the hallway. He pulled a heavy tactical flashlight from his denim pocket and clicked the beam onto the floor.

"Stay right here with Lily, Noah," Ethan said quietly, his voice an unshakeable anchor. "The main breaker probably tripped. I'll go check the panel."
He knew it wasn't a tripped breaker. The neighborhood grid was fully operational. Someone had just manually cut the master power cable from the exterior junction box on the side of the house.
