Chapter 20 - THE OPEN DOOR

That evening, the Carter house was filled with the warm, rich smell of roasted chicken and home-cooked soup.
The living room fireplace crackled softly, throwing dancing golden light across the polished hardwood floors where Noah and Lily were sitting side-by-side, playing a board game and laughing merrily.
Ethan stood near the front entryway. He reached out and touched the smooth brass handle of the front door.
For weeks, this house had felt like a fortress under siege—a place where locks, deadbolts, and fear dictated every waking hour. But as he looked around the sunlit, comfortable room, listening to the pure, ringing laughter of his son and daughter, he knew the terror had finally been erased.
He unlocked the heavy deadbolt on the front door and left the inner latch unclosed, letting the warmth of the home welcome the peaceful night outside.
Ethan walked over to the rug, dropping down to sit between Noah and Lily.
Noah handed his father a wooden game piece, while Lily leaned her small head trustingly against Ethan’s broad shoulder, her tiny fingers wrapped securely around his thumb.

Ethan pulled his children close into his arms, looking out the large windows at the calm, starlit sky. The darkness had tried to tear his family apart, but love, strength, and an unbroken fatherly promise had built a foundation that no shadow could ever touch again.
