Chapter 2 - IRON AND STILLNESS

Ethan Carter froze in the doorway.

In his early 30s, Ethan was a tall, athletic American man with broad shoulders, a rugged square jaw, and short dark-brown hair. He wore an open blue denim shirt over an olive-green Henley, dark jeans, and worn brown boots dusty from a long week on a construction site.

His blue-gray eyes locked onto the scene before him in a fraction of a second. He saw Vanessa holding the raised wooden bat over his seven-year-old son. He saw his daughter curled on the floor beneath the weapon, sobbing into her stuffed rabbit.

"WHAT DID YOU JUST DO?" Ethan’s voice cut through the room like a thunderclap, vibrating the glass panes of the windows.

Vanessa dropped the bat onto the rug with a dull thud. She smoothed the front of her rust-colored jumpsuit, her face instantly morphing into a mask of frantic, self-righteous composure as she stepped forward to block Ethan’s path.

"Ethan! Thank God you're home," Vanessa gasped, her voice dripping with artificial relief. "They were completely out of control—Lily threw a tantrum and Noah tried to hit me—"

Ethan didn't even look at her face. He shoved her aside with one broad shoulder, sweeping past her as if she were made of air.

He dropped to his knees on the hardwood floor, reaching out his large, calloused hands to gather both sobbing children into his broad chest.

"Daddy’s here," Ethan whispered, his voice trembling as Noah wrapped his tiny arms tightly around Ethan’s neck, burying his face into the olive-green Henley. "I'm here. I've got you."

"She hurt Lily!" Noah sobbed into his father's shoulder, his small body shaking uncontrollably. "She pulled her!"

Ethan gently shifted Lily back to inspect her. His heart seized as his gaze fell to her pale left ankle. Circling her skin was a dark, purple-and-red bruise in the distinct shape of a adult handprint.

Ethan’s breathing stopped.

Then, his blue-gray eyes drifted to the floor beneath the edge of the sofa. Half-hidden under the leather fringe lay a thick, heavy leather belt with a brass buckle.

His voice turned iron-cold. "What is that, Noah?"

Noah clung tighter to Ethan’s denim shirt, his voice dropping into a terrified, muffled whisper against his father's ear.

"She’d make her stand all night facing the wall..." Noah whispered, his small voice cracking. "...and lock us in the basement if we told."

Ethan slowly lifted his eyes from his children toward the far hallway.

At the end of the corridor, the reinforced heavy pine basement door stood fastened shut—with a heavy silver padlock snapped firmly into place.

Ethan’s face settled into a terrifying, absolute stillness.
