Chapter 6 - THE FOUNDATION OF DECEIT

The stairs creaked beneath Ethan’s worn brown boots as he descended into the cool, damp darkness beneath the living room.

The air in the basement smelled of earth, old concrete, and aged pine. Ethan pulled a heavy steel flashlight from his tool belt and clicked it on. The sharp beam sliced through the gloom, illuminating stone walls, rusted water pipes, and stacks of forgotten storage crates from his late sister Sarah’s life.

Ethan walked directly to the alcove beneath the main staircase—the exact spot Noah had mentioned.

The concrete floor had been disturbed. A heavy wooden storage trunk, once pushed flush against the foundation wall, had been dragged aside, leaving deep scrape marks across the dusty floor. Beneath it lay a loose slab of concrete, propped open by a small iron chisel.

Ethan dropped to one knee, shining his flashlight into the exposed cavity beneath the foundation.

Inside sat a reinforced steel firebox. The lock had been picked, its latch hanging open.

Ethan reached inside and pulled out a leather-bound ledger along with an encrypted black drive. He opened the ledger; the pages were filled with Sarah’s neat, familiar handwriting, dated up until three days before her fatal car crash.

“Vanessa isn't just auditing the estate. She discovered the offshore trust Sarah’s firm set up for Noah and Lily. She’s trying to force a liquid foreclosure before the kids reach eighteen. If she gets full legal guardianship, she controls the release codes.”

Ethan’s blue-gray eyes burned with cold anger. Vanessa hadn't been staying in the house to care for the children or collect a debt. She was searching for the physical encryption key to strip his niece and nephew of their entire inheritance—and she had used terror, isolation, and physical abuse to keep two frightened children from speaking out.

Footsteps clicked softly at the top of the stairs.
