Chapter 17 - THE UNBROKEN BOND

Vanessa’s public defender attempted to speak, but Judge Abernathy raised a sharp hand to cut him off instantly.

"I am revoking all estate management authority previously granted to Ms. Reed," Judge Abernathy ruled, slamming her wooden gavel against the desk with a crack like thunder. "Ms. Reed will remain in federal custody without bail pending her criminal trial."

The judge’s gaze softened noticeably as she turned her eyes toward Ethan.

"Mr. Ethan Carter," the judge spoke, her tone turning warm and respectful. "The court has reviewed your sister’s original testament, as well as the police reports from Friday night. You risked your life to defend your family from violent home invaders. The court recognizes your absolute devotion and unshakeable fitness as a parent."

Ethan stood up straight, his hands steady at his sides.

"By order of this court," Judge Abernathy declared, "sole, permanent legal guardianship and full custody of Noah and Lily Carter is hereby awarded to Ethan Carter. The Carter estate trust is fully released to his administration. Court is adjourned."

BANG!

A profound wave of relief rushed through Ethan’s chest, washing away months of suffocating tension. Marcus Miller clapped a heavy, proud hand onto Ethan's shoulder.

As bailiffs stepped forward to lead Vanessa out through the side door, she stopped, her green eyes burning into Ethan’s face one last time.

"You think you saved them, Ethan?" she hissed, her voice venomous. "They're broken. They'll always remember what happened in that basement."

Ethan looked down at her calmly, his blue-gray eyes completely devoid of fear.

"They won't remember the basement, Vanessa," Ethan said softly, his voice firm and clear. "They'll remember that their father came home."
