Chapter 7 - THE TACTICAL RETREAT

Ethan closed the ledger, slipped the black drive into his Henley pocket, and stood up calmly into the shadows.

Vanessa stood at the head of the basement stairs, her tall silhouette framed by the hallway light. She held a heavy brass flashlight in one hand, her rust-colored jumpsuit vivid against the dark wood frame.

"You're breaking court orders, Ethan," Vanessa called down, her voice echoing off the concrete walls with icy confidence. "That basement is sealed under estate inventory mandate. Entering it is a federal misdemeanor."

Ethan stepped into the beam of her light, his broad shoulders filling the narrow stairwell. He walked up the steps slowly, unhurried, until he stood two inches from her on the top landing.

"You picked the lock on my sister's box three nights ago, Vanessa," Ethan said softly.

Vanessa’s green eyes flickered with a brief, volatile flash of surprise, but her icy composure smoothed over instantly.

"I am an officer of the probate court," she replied smoothly, folding her arms. "I am authorized to search for all financial assets linked to Sarah's default. And tomorrow morning, when my legal team files the emergency petition, the judge will grant me full temporary custody. You'll be escorted off this property by the county sheriff by noon."

Ethan looked down at her sharp, cruel face. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't offer a single threat.

"You have twelve hours, Vanessa," Ethan whispered, his blue-gray eyes completely dead of emotion. "Pack your bags and get out of my house."

"Or what?" Vanessa sneered, stepping closer, her sharp jaw set. "You'll throw me out? Try it, Ethan. The moment your hands touch me, the police arrest you for felony assault. You lose Noah and Lily forever."

Ethan simply pulled the heavy pine basement door shut, locked the latch from the outside, and walked past her without another word.
