Chapter 11 - THE SHADOW ON THE LAWNBy early Tuesday evening, a deceptive calm had settled over the Pendelton household.

Upstairs, the nursery was warm and peaceful. Clara sat in the plush glider chair, gently nursing three-week-old Maya. The physical swelling on Clara’s forehead had reduced to a faint yellowing mark, and for the first time since Maya was born, the haunted look in her hazel eyes had begun to fade.
Downstairs, Arthur was in his home office, finalizing structural plans for a new city hospital contract. His broad shoulders were relaxed, his dark hair messy as he leaned over his drafting tablet.
Outside, however, the shadows were lengthening.
A black sedan sat parked fifty yards down the tree-lined suburban street, its engine idling silently. Inside sat Victor Vance—Julian Vance’s younger brother and a disgraced former private investigator who specialized in high-stakes corporate sabotage.
Victor held a tablet displaying a live video feed from a micro-camera planted inside the nursery air vent four days prior—installed by Eleanor while she still had access to the home.
On his phone, Eleanor’s voice was as sharp as broken glass. "Has the package been delivered?"
"My man dropped off the formula tin at their front porch ten minutes ago," Victor replied smoothly, watching Arthur step out to pick up the delivery box. "Custom order from the specialty boutique Clara uses. She won't suspect a thing."
"Good," Eleanor sneered over the receiver. "The synthetic neuro-sedative is undetectable in standard blood panels unless specifically tested for. Within two hours, she will display full-blown post-partum psychosis symptoms in front of the emergency responders."

"And the anonymous child welfare tip?"
"Already logged with Social Services," Eleanor confirmed coldly. "They will arrive at 8:00 PM for an emergency welfare check. Make sure my son watches his wife fall apart in handcuffs."
