Chapter 9 - THE CORNERED VIPER

The boardroom fell into dead silence.
Julian Vance stared at the hard drive, his chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow breaths. He knew Arthur wasn't bluffing; the exact account numbers and offshore shell codes had been named in Arthur's filing. One phone call from the IRS would dismantle Julian's entire career and strip him of his law license.
Julian turned to Eleanor, his voice frantic and low. "Eleanor... we have to release the accounts. We can't fight this in open court."
"Are you insane?!" Eleanor shrieked, turning her fury on her attorney. "You work for me! Fix this!"
"I can't fix a federal fraud charge, Eleanor!" Julian snapped back, his aristocratic veneer completely gone. He reached for his phone, his hands trembling as he called the bank’s legal department. "Unfreeze the Pendelton & Associates payroll line immediately. Execute a full release of the injunction."
Eleanor stood frozen, her eyes wide with unadulterated hatred as she glared at her son. She had spent thirty years controlling every aspect of the family empire, using guilt, wealth, and manipulation to keep Arthur tethered to her will.
Now, standing in the middle of his office, she realized her leverage was gone.
Arthur leaned down, pulling the black hard drive off the table and slipping it back into his jacket pocket.

"Get out of my building," Arthur told her, his blue eyes cold and unyielding. "If I see you near my office, my home, or my family again, the drive goes directly to the US Attorney."
Eleanor grabbed her leather handbag, her knuckles stark white, and marched out of the boardroom without saying another word.
