Chapter 18 - NEW FOUNDATIONSSix months later.

Spring had arrived in full bloom, painting the suburban neighborhood in vibrant shades of green and soft pastel pink.

Arthur’s architectural firm had undergone a complete transformation. Stripped of the toxic influence of the Pendelton Trust, Arthur had rebranded the company as Aura Design & Structure, bringing on his long-time junior partner David as a full co-owner. Without the constant threat of corporate sabotage, the firm flourished, securing major municipal contracts for sustainable community housing and pediatric centers.

At the house, the old nursery had been completely renovated. The oak crib where the assault had occurred was replaced by a hand-carved cedar bed built by Arthur himself. The star-patterned quilt now rested over a cozy reading armchair near the large, sunlit window.

Four-month-old Maya sat on a plush play mat on the floor, giggling softly as she reached her chubby hands toward a wooden rattle. Her bright blue eyes—inherited directly from her father—were wide, curious, and utterly free of fear.

Clara sat beside her, her hazel eyes bright with health and happiness. The faint mark on her forehead had vanished entirely, leaving no physical trace of the night that had almost destroyed her life.

Arthur walked into the nursery, carrying a tray with two fresh cups of coffee and a small plate of warm pastries.

"Is the little princess ready for her afternoon nap?" Arthur asked, a warm, booming laugh gracing his chest as he set the tray on the side table.

"She’s too busy trying to learn how to roll over," Clara smiled, looking up at her husband with deep, abiding affection.
