Chapter 15 - THE FALL OF ELEANORThe senior deputy looked at the magenta test strip, then turned his gaze slowly toward Eleanor.

"Officer," Arthur spoke, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying rumble as he stepped down off the porch toward his mother. "My wife recorded the exact chemical composition. My mother planted a camera in my daughter’s nursery and attempted to poison my family to fabricate grounds for child custody removal."
The caseworker looked at the sealed bottle, then at Eleanor, her expression turning into deep, professional disgust. "Cancel the emergency removal," she told the deputies quietly. "Secure the crime scene."
"Wait! You can't believe them!" Eleanor screamed, stepping backward toward her car as the second deputy stepped onto the lawn, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt. "I am Eleanor Pendelton! My family owns half this county!"
"Mrs. Eleanor Pendelton," the senior deputy said firmly, grabbing her wrist and twisting it behind her back. "You are under arrest for attempted toxic administration, conspiracy to commit child endangerment, and violation of a protection order."
CLICK-CLACK.
The steel cuffs snapped tightly around Eleanor’s wrists.
She struggled frantically, her immaculately styled hair falling into her face, her designer blouse twisting as she was pressed against the hood of the police cruiser.
"Arthur! Tell them!" Eleanor wept hysterically, looking at her son with wide, desperate eyes. "I did it for you! I did it for the family name!"
Arthur stood on the porch, his broad arm wrapped tightly around Clara’s waist, shielding his wife and daughter. He looked down at his mother with a cold, unshakeable finality that shattered whatever was left of her control.

"You don't have a family name anymore, Eleanor," Arthur said softly. "You just have a case number."
As the police cruiser pulled away, its red-and-blue lights fading into the dark suburban night, Arthur pulled Clara close against his broad chest, kissing her forehead as the quiet returned to their home.
