Chapter 4 - THE DAMAGE DONE

The house returned to a heavy, suffocating silence, broken only by the distant wailing of baby Maya upstairs.
Arthur leaned his forehead against the cool wood of the front door, his chest rising and falling in deep, ragged breaths. Tears burned his eyes once more—not from anger, but from the sickening realization of what his wife had been enduring while he was at work, trusting his mother to be a sanctuary.
He wiped his face with his sleeve and bounded up the stairs.
In the nursery, Clara was on her knees beside the oak crib, holding little Maya tightly against her collarbone, rocking back and forth while tears streamed down her bruised cheeks. The star-patterned quilt was wrapped loosely around the baby’s legs.
"Clara..." Arthur whispered softly, dropping to his knees beside them on the carpet.
Clara flinched instinctively before realizing it was him. She collapsed against his shoulder, holding the crying baby between them.
"I tried, Arthur... I tried to be good..." Clara sobbed, her voice raw and broken. "She took my phone three days ago... she told me if I complained to you, she’d use her lawyers to take Maya away from me... she said I was crazy..."
Arthur’s hands trembled as he touched the soft skin of Clara’s cheek, inspecting the deep red bruise blooming near her hairline. His heart tore into shreds.
"Look at me, Clara," Arthur commanded softly, his blue eyes locking onto hers with absolute, unwavering truth. "Look at me."
Clara lifted her tearful hazel eyes to his.

"You are not crazy," Arthur swore, his voice thick with emotion. "She is gone. She will never touch you again. She will never see Maya again. I will burn every dollar in my bank account before I let her hurt you again."
He took Maya gently into his broad arms, holding his tiny daughter against his chest, and wrapped his other arm securely around Clara, holding his broken family close as the rain beat against the nursery window.
