Chapter 5 - THE FIRST THREAT

By 3:00 AM, the house had been secured.

Clara was asleep in their master bedroom, exhausted from the physical trauma, her head bandaged and Maya sleeping peacefully in a bassinet beside her bed.

Arthur sat at the kitchen island downstairs in the dark, wearing a dark gray sweater, a steaming cup of untouched black coffee sitting before him. In his hands lay Clara’s retrieved smartphone, which he had found hidden inside a locked drawer in Eleanor’s guest room.

He unlocked the phone. The notification screen was flooded with missed calls and messages—not just from Eleanor, but from Julian Vance, the senior managing partner at Arthur’s architectural firm and Eleanor’s long-time legal advisor.

A new text message chimed on the screen.

Julian Vance: Arthur. Your mother has informed me of the unprovoked physical altercation at the residence tonight. As legal custodian of the Pendelton Family Trust, I am issuing a freeze on your firm’s operating capital effective 8:00 AM tomorrow. We need to discuss Clara’s surrender of parental rights before this becomes a public police matter.

Arthur stared at the glowing screen.

The assault in the nursery hadn't been a sudden outburst of maternal insanity. It was the opening move of a calculated, hostile takeover designed to strip Clara of her daughter and force Arthur back under his mother's complete control.

Arthur slowly stood up from the stool. He didn't panic. The fog of shock had completely cleared, leaving behind a cold, sharp, and lethal clarity.

He walked into his home office, opened his personal safe, and pulled out a thumb drive containing six years of internal financial audits from the Pendelton Trust—files his father had given him before his death.

Arthur plugged the drive into his laptop, his blue eyes illuminated by the cold screen light as the rain lashed against the glass outside.

"You want a war, Eleanor?" Arthur whispered to the empty room. "Then you get one."
