Chapter 10 - THE ARRIVAL OF LILY

Jessica stared at the cream parchment. The numbers on the page were staggering—enough to secure Lily's education, health, and future ten times over. But it was the safety—the impenetrable wall Giovanni offered against Tyler’s relentless harassment—that pulled at her soul.

"And what happens if I say no?" Jessica asked quietly. "If I walk out that door right now?"

"Then I call you a cab, pay for your broken shoe, and let you return to a family that feeds on your sacrifice," Giovanni said without a trace of anger. "The choice is entirely yours, Jessica."

The heavy oak doors of the library creaked open again.

A sleepy, five-year-old girl with tumbling chestnut curls stepped into the room, rubbing her eyes with a small fist. She was wearing her favorite fleece pajamas with pink rabbits. Mrs. Gable, the kindly white-haired neighbor, stood right behind her, looking wide-eyed at the grand library.

"Mommy?" Lily murmured, her voice small and trembling in the vast room. "Where are we? The nice men in suits said we were going on an adventure..."

All the cold, steel armor Jessica had built up over the night vanished in a single heartbeat.

She dropped to her knees on the rug, extending her arms wide. "Lily-bug!"

The small girl ran across the Persian carpet and threw her arms around Jessica’s neck, burying her face in her mother's shoulder. Jessica squeezed her eyes shut, holding her daughter tight, feeling the small, steady rhythm of Lily's breathing against her collarbone.

Giovanni did not move. He stood quietly near the fireplace, watching the mother and daughter with a unreadable, guarded expression.

Lily peeked over Jessica’s shoulder, her big brown eyes locking onto the tall, dark man standing by the fire in his tailored tuxedo.

"Is he a prince, Mommy?" Lily whispered innocently, loud enough for her voice to echo in the quiet room.

Jessica pulled back slightly, smoothing her daughter's curls, then looked up at Giovanni.

He was watching Lily with a softness that seemed entirely foreign to his sharp, scarred face. For a fraction of a second, the dangerous syndicate lord looked human.

Jessica stood up, holding Lily securely on her hip. She walked over to the mahogany desk, picked up the silver fountain pen resting beside the document, and brought the nib to the cream paper.

She looked Giovanni dead in the eye.

"Three years," Jessica said, her voice ringing with clear, immovable purpose. "Nobody touches my daughter. Nobody disrespects my work at the hospital. And Tyler Vance gets nothing."

Giovanni extended his hand over the desk.

"Welcome to the family, Mrs. Fierro," he said softly.

Jessica signed her name on the dotted line: Jessica Hale Fierro.
