Chapter 3 - THE SILENT RIPPLE

It didn't happen all at once.
It began with a laughter cutting off at a table of property developers near the bar.
Then, two prominent federal judges stopped mid-sentence, their wine glasses hovering inches from their lips.
Like a row of dominoes falling in slow motion, conversation after conversation withered away. The ambient roar of three hundred wealthy guests laughing, clinking crystal, and gossiping melted into an eerie, suffocating silence.
Jessica felt the shift immediately. She kept her eyes locked on the dark lapels of the stranger's tuxedo, her heart hammering wildly. She assumed people were looking at her—at her cheap dress, her broken shoe, her sudden boldness.
"Don't look down," the man instructed softly, his voice a calm anchor in the rising vacuum of the room. "Keep your eyes on me."
"They're staring at me," Jessica whispered, her voice trembling. "They know I don't belong here."
"They aren't looking at you, Jessica," he replied smoothly, turning her in a slow, elegant arc across the marble floor. "They are looking at me."
Jessica dared a glance over his shoulder.
Her breath hitched.
The guests weren't looking at her dress. They were looking at him—and their faces were masks of pure, unadulterated shock, awe, and unmistakable terror.
Near the champagne tower, an elderly man—Arthur Pendelton, the billionaire founder of Chicago Banking Group—lowered his glass so fast his hand shook, spilling vintage Dom Pérignon onto his silk cuff. He stared at Jessica’s dance partner with wide, disbelieving eyes.
Across the floor, Tyler stood completely frozen. His handsome face was twisted in absolute confusion, his mouth slightly agape. Vanessa was clutching Tyler’s arm so hard her knuckles were white, her eyes fixed on the man holding Jessica’s waist. Her smugness had completely vanished, replaced by a pale, panicked horror.
The orchestra continued to play, but the musicians' hands seemed hesitant, as if the very air in the room had grown heavy and dense.
Jessica looked back up into the stranger’s face. He remained entirely unbothered by the three hundred pairs of eyes locked onto him. His expression was a fortress of calm, controlled power.
"Who are you?" Jessica breathed, her fingers tightening on his shoulder. "Why is everyone looking at you like that?"
May you like
He leaned down slightly, his lips brushing the shell of her ear.
"Giovanni Fierro," he murmured.
