Chapter 2 - TEN SECONDS

Standing beside her table was a man who did not belong to the bright, cheerful rhythm of the ballroom.
He was in his early nineties of height—tall, broad-shouldered, and effortlessly commanding. He wore a midnight-black tailored tuxedo that seemed to absorb the surrounding light rather than reflect it. His dark hair was neatly styled, accentuating the sharp, aristocratic line of his jawline and a faint, silver scar running horizontally across his chin. He radiated a calm, terrifying presence—a man who moved with absolute, controlled precision.
He extended a long-fingered, powerful hand toward her.
"Dance with me. Now," he said quietly.
Jessica stared at his hand, her breath catching in her throat. Her mind raced, confused and entirely disoriented by his sudden appearance.
"You don't even know me," Jessica whispered, shrinking back slightly into her chair.
The man didn't lower his hand. His dark, impenetrable eyes drifted casually past her shoulder, tracking Tyler and Vanessa as they reached the middle of the room.
"Jessica Hale," the man said, his voice flat, calm, and utterly chilling. "Pediatric nurse at Mercy General. Mother of Lily. Sister of the bride."
Jessica’s heart slammed against her chest. The color completely drained from her face. Her brown eyes widened in absolute shock. "Who... who are you? How do you know that?"
Across the ballroom, the live orchestra transitioned into a slow, sweeping waltz.
The dark stranger didn't answer her question. His gaze returned to her face, unblinking and relentless.
"Ten seconds," he said.
Jessica swallowed hard, her pulse racing in her ears. "What?"
"Nine," he counted softly, his hand remaining perfectly still in the air between them.
Panic and confusion tangled in Jessica’s chest. She glanced across the crowded room. Tyler had stopped near the center archway, turning around to check if Jessica was still sitting alone in her corner of shame. Beside him, Vanessa’s triumphant smile faltered as her eyes locked onto the tall, dark figure standing over Jessica's table.
"Eight," the man said.
There was no warmth in his offer, but there was an immovable wall of authority. Jessica looked down at his extended palm, then looked back up at his scarred chin and dark, commanding eyes. Anything was better than sitting at this table under the pitying eyes of her ex-husband.
Jessica lifted her hand and placed her trembling fingers into his.
The moment her skin touched his, his fingers closed around hers with firm, solid warmth. Without a word, he gently pulled her to her feet. The motion was so fluid that Jessica barely felt her mended shoe touch the floor before she was standing inches from his broad chest.
He stepped close, placing his right hand firmly against the small of her back. The heat of his palm burned through the modest fabric of her dress.

"Step," he murmured into the quiet space between them.
And as he guided her out from behind the kitchen doors onto the polished marble, the entire room began to shatter.
