Chapter 4 - THE NAME ON THE GLASS

The name meant nothing to Jessica. In her world of twelve-hour pediatric shifts, feverish toddlers, and overdue utility bills, billionaire social hierarchies did not exist.
But as the name left his lips, she saw the subtle shift in the room deepen.
Giovanni Fierro.
He led her through the slow waltz with flawless, effortless grace. Every step he took was precise, commanding the space around them so completely that couples on the dance floor reflexively backed away, clearing a wide, empty circle on the marble floor for the two of them.
"Whatever happens next..." Giovanni whispered, his dark eyes meeting hers with an intensity that made her breath catch, "...don't let go of my hand."
Jessica stared at him, the realization crashing over her like a tidal wave. This wasn't a random act of chivalry. This wasn't a pity dance from a handsome stranger.
She had just stepped onto a stage she couldn't see, playing a role in a script she didn't know.
"Giovanni," she whispered, testing the sharp, Italian weight of the name on her tongue. "What is this?"
"Survival," he said simply.
Before she could ask another question, the silence of the room was broken by the sharp, hurried click of expensive dress shoes on marble.
Tyler was approaching them.
He had left Vanessa standing near the edge of the dance floor and was walking toward them with aggressive, forced confidence. But as he drew closer to Giovanni, his steps slowed. His shoulders, usually thrown back in arrogant pride, slouched slightly.
"Mr. Fierro?" Tyler said, his voice cracking slightly before he corrected his pitch. He stopped three feet away, his eyes darting frantically between Giovanni’s unreadable face and Jessica’s hand resting against Giovanni’s suit jacket.
Giovanni did not stop dancing immediately. He completed a slow, deliberate turn, bringing Jessica smoothly to his side before he halted, his arm remaining firmly around her waist.
Giovanni turned his head slowly, looking down at Tyler as if noticing a small piece of dust on the toe of his boot.
"You are interrupting," Giovanni said flatly. The tone was not loud, but it carried across the quiet ballroom like a crack of thunder.
May you like
Tyler swallowed hard, his forehead glistening with a fine sheen of sweat under the chandelier lights. "Mr. Fierro... I'm—I'm Tyler Vance. Senior Vice President at Vance Capital. We met at the skyline gala last year."
Giovanni did not blink. "I don't remember you."
