Chapter 5 - THE PRICE OF PRESERVATION

Tyler’s face flushed a deep, humiliating crimson. He cast a quick, desperate glance at Jessica, his eyes pleading for something she couldn't identify.

"Mr. Fierro, sir," Tyler stammered, stepping closer. "I... I think there's been a misunderstanding. This is Jessica. She’s... she’s my ex-wife."

"I know who she is," Giovanni replied calmly.

"She’s a nurse, sir," Tyler blurted out, his arrogance betraying his panic. "She doesn't belong in these circles. If she approached you or asked you for money—"

"Tyler," Jessica spoke up, her voice surprisingly sharp, her dignity flaring.

Giovanni raised a single finger, silencing both of them instantly.

He looked down at Tyler with an expression of cold, dangerous pity. "Jessica is not standing here because she approached me, Mr. Vance. She is standing here because I requested her presence."

Giovanni paused, letting the words settle over the silent, listening ballroom.

"And as of ten minutes ago," Giovanni added, his voice dropping into a deep, icy register, "her business is my business. Which means your firm's pending credit line with Fierro Enterprise Holdings... is currently under review."

Tyler’s eyes went wide with pure terror. His breath caught in his throat. "Mr. Fierro—please—that credit line is sixty percent of our operating capital for Q4! We signed the preliminary papers yesterday!"

"Then I suggest you pray I find a reason not to tear them up tomorrow morning," Giovanni said softly.

He didn't wait for Tyler to respond. Giovanni turned his back on the trembling young executive, his hand sliding down to clasp Jessica’s fingers firmly once again.

"Come, Jessica," Giovanni said, his tone softening slightly as he looked at her. "Our car is waiting."

Jessica looked back over her shoulder as Giovanni led her toward the grand arched exit of the ballroom.

Tyler was standing motionless in the center of the floor, looking completely ruined. Vanessa had rushed to his side, her hands fluttering in useless panic, her eyes wide with shock as she watched her cousin walk away.

The crowd parted before Giovanni like the Red Sea, guests bowing their heads slightly as he passed, none daring to meet his eyes.

They stepped out into the crisp, cold night air of the Chicago riverfront. A sleek, matte-black armored sedan sat running at the curb, its rear door already held open by a massive security guard in a black coat.

Giovanni stopped beside the open door and looked down at Jessica. The wind caught a few loose strands of her chestnut hair, sweeping them across her cheek.

"You have a choice, Jessica," Giovanni said quietly, his dark eyes watching her intensely. "You can get in this car, and tomorrow your life will change in ways you cannot comprehend. Or I can call a cab to take you back to your apartment, and we never speak again."

Jessica stood on the chilly pavement, her thin dress offering no protection against the wind, her broken shoe pinching her foot. She looked back at the grand glass doors of the ballroom, then looked at the man holding open the door to a world of dangerous shadows.

"Why me?" Jessica asked, her voice steady despite the shivering of her shoulders.

May you like

Giovanni’s scarred chin tightened slightly.

"Because, Jessica," he said softly, "you are the only innocent thing left in this city."
