Chapter 10 - THE WAR IS DECLARED

By midnight, the quiet Napa Valley estate looked like a war zone.

Dozens of law enforcement vehicles lined the long, gravel driveway, their red and blue strobe lights illuminating the surrounding vineyards. Forensic technicians in white suits carried heavy aluminum cases down into the basement, while news vans from local San Francisco TV stations began parking outside the front gates, lured by the massive police presence at one of California’s most prominent families' homes.

I sat in the back of an ambulance parked near the fountain, a fresh sterile bandage wrapped neatly around my head.

The paramedic handed me a cup of warm water. "The ambulance can transport you to the county hospital now, Mrs. Sterling."

"Thank you," I said softly, taking a sip. "I'm ready."

As the paramedic closed the rear doors of the ambulance, I looked through the glass window.

Charles and Eleanor Sterling were being led out of their front doors in handcuffs, surrounded by officers. Their expensive clothes were disheveled, their heads bowed to avoid the flashing cameras of the news reporters who had gathered at the perimeter gates. Behind them, Adrian was being loaded into a separate transport van, his face twisted in rage as he shouted uselessly at his legal team.

They thought they were inviting me to a family dinner to strip my home, my wealth, and my dignity.

They thought a violent strike to my head would make me bow my head in fear.

Instead, they had handed me the sledgehammer that shattered their entire empire.

I pulled my phone from my pocket. The screen was still smeared with my dried blood from earlier that evening. I opened my contacts, scrolled past Adrian’s name, and clicked on a contact I hadn't called in three years: Marcus Vance — Senior Partner at Vance & Associates, Corporate Litigation.

The line rang twice before a deep, authoritative voice answered.

"Claire? It’s midnight. Is everything alright?"

"Marcus," I said, my voice steady, ice-cold, and filled with unwavering purpose. "I need you to file three things first thing tomorrow morning."

"Tell me."

"First, an emergency petition for absolute divorce from Adrian Sterling on grounds of felony domestic violence. Second, a full freeze on all joint assets and bank accounts associated with Sterling Wineries."

I paused, looking through the ambulance window one last time as the police vans drove away into the night.

"And third?" Marcus asked.

May you like

"Third," I replied, a small, cold smile touching my lips for the first time all night, "I want you to prepare a civil lawsuit against the entire Sterling estate for corporate fraud, physical assault, and emotional trauma."

"How much are we suing for, Claire?"
