Chapter 20 - UNBROKEN

One year after the arrest.

The autumn sun set over the Napa Valley, painting the sky in deep hues of violet, orange, and crimson.

The grand opening of the Vance-Lin Botanical Sanctuary was in full swing on the land where the old Sterling mansion once stood. Children played on the expansive manicured lawns, community leaders mingled in the sunlit pavilion, and women who had survived domestic hardship walked through the tranquil garden paths with heads held high.

I stood on the stone terrace overlooking the valley, wearing an elegant ivory coat. The faint scar near my left temple was barely visible now—a subtle, silver line that I chose never to cover with makeup.

It wasn't a mark of shame. It was my badge of absolute victory.

Marcus Vance walked up beside me, handing me a glass of sparkling grape juice from our latest harvest.

"The board just approved the expansion into Sonoma, Claire," Marcus said, smiling proudly. "You're building an empire that will outlast all of us."

"We built it together, Marcus," I replied, clinking my glass against his.

He nodded gently and walked back toward the pavilion to join Sarah and Maya.

I stood alone for a moment, listening to the gentle rustle of the grapevine leaves in the evening wind and the distant laughter echoing from the sanctuary gardens.

I reached up with two fingers, touching the faint scar on my temple one last time.

They had invited me to dinner expecting a victim. They had brought intimidation, violence, and greed to force me into submission. They believed that pain would make me quiet, that humiliation would make me obey.

They were wrong.

I turned back toward the warm lights of the sanctuary, stepping into a future that belonged entirely, undeniably, and unapologetically to me.
