Chapter 8 - THE LOCKED STEEL DOOR

The paramedic bandaged my head tightly with clean gauze, allowing me to walk down the broad hallway toward the rear of the estate under my own power.

Behind the grand kitchen lay a heavy, solid oak door that led to the wine cellar and basement storage. Officer Davis stood guard beside it, his hand resting on his belt.

Charles marched down the hallway, his expensive loafers clicking angrily against the marble. Two junior attorneys from his firm were already on speakerphone through his mobile device.

"You have no search warrant, Sergeant!" Charles spat, his authority reasserting itself. "This is private property! I demand you step away from that door immediately!"

"Mr. Sterling, your daughter-in-law has made a formal statement indicating a potential secondary crime scene on the premises," Ramirez replied calmly, turning to face him. "We are securing the entry point while we contact the district attorney's office."

Suddenly, Maya stepped out from the shadows of the kitchen.

Her husband—Adrian's older brother, Julian Sterling—grabbed her wrist tightly, pulling her back. "Maya, shut up! Get back upstairs with the kids!"

"Let go of me, Julian," Maya said. Her voice was remarkably quiet, but it held a sharp edge that made Julian freeze.

She pulled her hand free from her husband's grip. For six years, Maya had lived in this house as the quiet, submissive daughter-in-law—the woman who never spoke up, who tolerated Julian’s infidelities and the family's relentless emotional abuse.

She walked straight up to Sergeant Ramirez and reached into the pocket of her cardigan.

"You don't need a search warrant," Maya said, handing a long, heavy brass key to the officer. "I am a legal resident of this estate. And I am giving you explicit consent to search the sub-basement."

"MAYA!" Charles roared, his face turning a terrifying shade of purple. "If you do this, you are finished! You will leave this family without a single penny! You will never see a dime of the trust fund!"

Maya looked at Charles—the man who had controlled every aspect of her life for almost a decade.

"Keep your money, Charles," she said, her voice steady and brimming with cold disgust. "I’d rather be broke than spend another day keeping your family's sick secrets."
