Chapter 5 - THE BASEMENT SECRET

Adrian’s sister-in-law, Maya—who had sat in absolute silence the entire evening—rose so violently that her heavy dining chair flipped backward onto the floor.
Maya hurried around the table and threw her body directly between Adrian and me. She raised her arms, shielding me.
"Do not come any closer to her, Adrian," Maya warned, her voice shaking uncontrollably.
Adrian stared at her in utter disbelief. "Maya. Step aside. Move."
"No!" she yelled, her body trembling, but her stance remaining rock-solid. "You have done enough!"
A thick, suffocating silence fell over the room. It lasted no more than a second, but in that second, I looked at Maya’s pale, terrified face.
She wasn't just afraid of what Adrian might do to me tonight. She was terrified of something else. Something he had done before. A secret this family had spent years burying beneath their wealth and influence.
Adrian stepped closer, his voice dropping into a low, vicious murmur. "Maya. This has nothing to do with you."
Maya flinched, looking as if she had been struck. "That... that is not true."
Charles turned sharply, his eyes digging into her like daggers. "Maya! Shut your mouth!"
Maya flinched at the sound of her father-in-law's voice, instinctively looking toward the hallway where her children had been taken. She was a woman broken by years of intimidation—a woman who had swallowed her own pain to protect her kids.
"This conversation is over!" Eleanor declared loudly, stepping up to control the room. "Claire, cancel the call!"
"No," I said, holding my phone tight. "It is finally beginning."
Over the phone line, the dispatcher asked if the suspect was still in the immediate area. I kept my eyes fixed on my husband's pale face.
"Yes," I replied. "He is standing less than ten feet away."
In the distance, through the quiet vineyard night, the faint sound of sirens cut through the darkness. The sound grew rapidly louder, echoing off the surrounding hills. Seconds later, bright red and blue light flashed through the tall, curtainless dining-room windows, washing over the expensive paintings and the blood-stained table.
Eleanor went completely pale, staggering back against a cabinet. Charles stared at Adrian in quiet horror. Adrian looked at Maya with pure hatred.
And Maya turned her head to look at me—her eyes wide, holding the expression of a woman who had spent years waiting for someone brave enough to make the phone call she had been too terrified to make herself.

She leaned down close to my ear. Her breath was cold, her lips trembling as she whispered six words that shattered the Sterling family forever:
"Tell them to check the basement."
