Chapter 6 - THE ARREST

The front doors of the Sterling estate were thrown open. Four uniformed Napa Valley police officers strode into the grand foyer, followed closely by two paramedics carrying emergency response kits.

"Napa Valley PD! Nobody move!" the lead officer, Sergeant Ramirez, called out, his hand resting on his holster.

The dining room descended into absolute chaos. Charles immediately smoothed his jacket, adopting his refined corporate posture. "Officers, thank goodness you're here. There’s been a minor domestic misunderstanding—"

"Quiet, sir," the second officer snapped, pushing past Charles.

The paramedic rushed straight to my side, placing a gloved hand on my shoulder. "Ma'am, keep that napkin pressed against the wound. We need to evaluate the head trauma."

I nodded slowly, stepping back from the table. Blood had soaked entirely through the white linen napkin, staining my hands and the collar of my silk blouse. I raised my hand and pointed directly at Adrian, who stood near the head of the table looking like a trapped animal.

"That is my husband, Adrian Sterling," I said, my voice clear and steady. "He struck me in the head with a heavy ceramic dinner plate. The shattered pieces are right there next to his placemat."

Sergeant Ramirez looked at the table—at the blood-splattered food, the jagged porcelain fragments, and the dark red pool expanding across the white cloth. Then he looked at Adrian's knuckles, which were still flecked with tomato sauce and a faint smear of blood.

"Sir, put your hands behind your back," Ramirez ordered, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Do you have any idea who I am?!" Adrian boomed, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "My father is Charles Sterling! We own Sterling Wineries! My lawyer will have your badge by morning!"

"Hands behind your back. Now," Ramirez repeated, stepping forward and grabbing Adrian’s right arm with a iron grip.

"Adrian, say nothing!" Eleanor screamed, rushing forward, her hands clawing at the air. "Officers, she provoked him! She insulted our family! She threatened us!"

"Provocation isn't a legal defense for felony assault, ma'am," the officer replied coldly, snapping the handcuffs around Adrian's wrists with a harsh CLICK.

Adrian winced as the steel bit into his skin. He glared at me across the room, his eyes brimming with unadulterated venom. "You're dead to me, Claire. You hear me? You'll leave this marriage with nothing!"

"I came into this marriage with everything, Adrian," I replied, staring back at him without flinching. "You're the one leaving with handcuffs."

As two officers escorted Adrian out toward the flashing police cruisers, Maya stepped back toward the shadow of the hallway. Her face was hollow, but her eyes locked onto mine, giving me a subtle, urgent nod.

She hadn't forgotten what she whispered. And neither had I.
