Chapter 17 - THE SENTENCING

The federal courtroom in downtown San Francisco was silent as a tomb.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Maya and Sarah. On the opposite side of the aisle sat Eleanor Sterling, stripped of her designer jewelry and high-society standing, wearing a plain gray dress with an ankle monitor visible above her shoe.
At the defense table stood Charles and Adrian Sterling in bright orange federal jump suits, their hands chained at their waists, guarded by three US Marshals.
Judge Thomas Kelly adjusted his glasses, looking down over the podium with a stern, unyielding gaze.
"Charles Sterling, for your role in tax fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to obstruct justice, I sentence you to fifteen years in federal prison without the possibility of parole," Judge Kelly declared.
Charles slumped slightly, his posture breaking as his lawyer placed a hand on his back.
"Adrian Sterling," Judge Kelly continued, his voice darkening. "For felony assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence, and witness intimidation, you are hereby sentenced to twelve years in a maximum-security federal facility."
Adrian’s head snapped up. He looked back toward the gallery, his bloodshot eyes locking onto mine. Gone was the arrogant, polished heir who had swung a ceramic plate across a dining table; what remained was a broken man facing the harsh reality of his own actions.
"Claire!" Adrian yelled, his voice cracking with desperation as the marshals grabbed his arms to lead him away. "Claire, please! Tell them to reduce it! You know I didn't mean to—"

"Silence in the court!" Judge Kelly slammed his gavel down.
I didn't utter a word. I simply sat straight in my chair, looking directly into his eyes until the heavy iron doors swung shut behind him, closing off his voice forever.
