Chapter 11 - THE MEDIA STORM

By 6:00 AM the following morning, video footage of Charles, Eleanor, and Adrian Sterling being led away from their estate in handcuffs was broadcasting on every major national news network.
"BREAKING NEWS: California Wine Dynasty Leaders Arrested in Shocking Raid."
I sat on the edge of a bed in a quiet private room at Saint Helena Hospital. A clean row of six neat stitches sat beneath a fresh dressing near my left temple. On the bedside table, two cell phones sat buzzing continuously on silent mode.
One phone was my personal device, filled with frantic text messages from Adrian’s relatives pleading for mercy. The second was a secure corporate phone provided by Marcus Vance, my lead attorney.
The door opened, and Marcus stepped inside. He was a towering man in his late fifties with sharp gray eyes, wearing an immaculate navy pinstripe suit. In his hand, he held a thick leather brief.
"The District Attorney just formally filed charges, Claire," Marcus announced, setting the brief on my lap. "Adrian is being held without bail on felony assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence. Charles and Eleanor are facing charges of accessory after the fact, witness intimidation, and unlawful imprisonment stemming from what forensics found in that basement."
I picked up the documents, scanning the legal language. "What did forensics find?"
Marcus’s expression darkened. "The soundproof room was fully equipped. They found DNA traces matching the former assistant, Sarah Lin. But more importantly, they found a floor safe hidden behind a fake concrete panel."
I looked up, my pulse quickening. "A floor safe?"
"Inside were ledgers, offshore bank transfer logs, and encrypted flash drives," Marcus said softly. "Charles wasn't just hiding a chamber of intimidation down there, Claire. He was running a multi-million-dollar tax evasion scheme and laundering money through shell corporations in Panama."
A slow, cold breath escaped my lips. "They wanted my two-bedroom condo and twenty-eight hundred dollars a month because their liquid assets were being seized by overseas auditors."

"Precisely," Marcus confirmed. "They weren't wealthy anymore. They were drowning in debt, living on borrowed time and stolen credit. They needed your property and income to keep up appearances before the federal investigation caught up to them."
I set the papers down, my eyes turning cold. "Then let's make sure they sink completely."
