Chapter 12 - THE BAIL HEARING

Thirty-six hours after the assault, Napa County Superior Court was packed to capacity with journalists, legal teams, and curious onlookers.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a tailored charcoal pantsuit with my hair pinned up to subtly expose the bandage over my temple. Beside me sat Maya, who had officially filed for divorce from Julian the previous evening and accepted my offer of legal protection.

Heavy iron doors swung open at the side of the courtroom.

Adrian, Charles, and Julian were led in wearing orange inmate jumpsuits, their hands chained at their waists. Eleanor sat at the defense table in a plain dark coat, her refined demeanor completely shattered, her manicured hands trembling as she spoke to her defense counsel.

When Adrian’s eyes caught mine from across the aisle, a flash of pure, unadulterated venom swept across his face. He leaned toward his high-priced defense attorney, whispering loudly enough for the front row to hear: "That lying bitch set us up."

"Quiet, Mr. Sterling," the defense attorney warned nervously.

Judge Rebecca Torres slammed her gavel down, bringing the courtroom to instant order.

"We are here for bail determination in the matter of the State versus Adrian, Charles, and Eleanor Sterling," Judge Torres declared, looking down over her half-moon glasses at the defense team. "Counselor, given the severity of the charges—specifically the discovery of a soundproof holding area on the property—why should this court consider release?"

"Your Honor," the head defense lawyer stood, smoothing his tie. "My clients are pillar members of this community. Adrian Sterling suffered a momentary loss of composure during a private family dispute. Mrs. Sterling’s injuries are minor, and the claims regarding the lower level are based on uncorroborated statements from an estranged relative."

Marcus Vance stood up from our table, stepping forward with absolute authority.

"Your Honor, if I may," Marcus interjected, placing a tablet onto the prosecution's desk. "We have just submitted an affidavit from Sarah Lin—the victim who was held in that subterranean room for three weeks in 2023—along with bank records proving Charles Sterling paid her five hundred thousand dollars in hush money. Furthermore, we have direct audio evidence captured by Mrs. Claire Sterling’s phone during the 911 dispatch call."

Marcus tapped the tablet screen.

The audio played loudly through the courtroom speakers: “He lost his temper... It was an accident... We can handle this privately...” followed by Charles’s booming threat: “You do not want to destroy your marriage over a misunderstanding!”

Judge Torres’s jaw tightened into a rigid line as the recording ended. She looked down at the defendants with cold disgust.

"Bail for Adrian Sterling is denied," Judge Torres ruled firmly, slamming her gavel. "Bail for Charles Sterling is set at ten million dollars. Bail for Eleanor Sterling is set at two million dollars, with full electronic monitoring and immediate surrender of all passports."

Adrian slammed his chained hands against the wood table. "THIS IS A JOKE! CLAIRE, YOU PSYCHO!"

"Remand the defendant!" the judge ordered. Bailiffs grabbed Adrian by his shoulders, hauling him out of the courtroom while he screamed profanities, his voice echoing down the marble hallways until the heavy doors slammed shut.
