Chapter 1 - THE AUDIO ON THE GARAGE FLOOR

The underground garage was humid, filled with the faint smell of engine oil and damp concrete. Sienna clutched her swollen stomach, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps as another contraction rippled through her body. Her hospital bag sat on the bumper of the black SUV, packed weeks ago in anticipation of this very day.

"Have the baby without me," Gavin said, his voice cold, stripped of any warmth he had shown her over the past four years.

Beside him stood his mother, Marjorie, holding a pair of heavy leather gloves and looking at Sienna not with concern, but with the sharp, calculating eye of a butcher inspecting a prize asset.

"It’s for the best, Sienna," Marjorie added smoothly, adjusting her pearl necklace. "Gavin has urgent business at the firm tonight. The Ferrante name won't suffer just because you're in labor."

Seven-year-old Mila, Sienna’s daughter from her first marriage, stood beside the SUV, holding an old smartphone pressed close to her chest. Her small fingers trembled, but her dark eyes were fixed on her stepfather and his mother. She had been recording every single word.

Just then, the elevator doors slid open with a soft metallic chime, and Nico Ferrante—the patriarch of the Ferrante estate and Gavin’s powerful father—stepped out into the garage. Two trusted, towering security guards walked close behind him.

Mila didn't hesitate. She ran straight to him, her small sneakers slapping against the polished concrete floor, and placed the phone gently into his large, calloused hand.

"Grandpa… I recorded Daddy talking to Grandma."

At those words, Gavin’s face changed instantly, the color draining from his cheeks. He lunged forward quickly, reaching out a desperate hand to seize the phone—but Nico moved faster. With an effortless, practiced sweep of his arm, Nico knocked Gavin’s wrist aside firmly and guided him backward until he stumbled against the rolling detailing cart.

The cart tipped over with a loud, echoing clatter, sending plastic buckets, microfiber cloths, and bottles of liquid wax spilling across the concrete floor.

At the same moment, Marjorie reached for Sienna’s hospital bag, her manicured nails digging into the strap as she tried to pull Sienna toward the side exit. But Nico stepped between them. He freed Sienna gently from Marjorie’s grasp, shifting his weight just enough to push Marjorie back until she stumbled into the tall rack of folded car covers. The heavy metal frame swayed, then collapsed around her in a violent rustle of canvas, plastic wrap, and dust.

Nico’s two guards moved steadily behind Gavin and Marjorie, standing firm like iron pillars to keep them from stepping a single inch closer.

Nico held Mila’s phone steady in one hand, thumb resting on the screen, his voice calm, low, and carrying a terrifying authority. "Now let us hear exactly what the two of you have been hiding."

Gavin turned sharply toward Marjorie, his face pale and panicked—and that was the moment that stood out most clearly to everyone present: he had tried to seize the phone before anyone had even spoken a single word about what Mila had recorded.

Nico tapped the screen. The speaker crackled to life.

"...the bloodline trust unlocks the moment the child is born," Marjorie’s recorded voice echoed clearly off the concrete walls. "Once Sienna signs the custody waiver under anesthesia at the private clinic, we don't need her anymore, Gavin. The Ferrante millions will be ours, and she can be declared unfit."

"What about Nico?" Gavin’s recorded voice replied, laced with anxious greed. "He’s watching the accounts."

"Nico’s tea is already taken care of," Marjorie’s voice sneered. "He won't survive the month."

Silence settled over the garage—heavy, suffocation-thin, and absolute.
