Chapter 8 - A VISIT TO THE SHADOWS

Though her life was rebuilding rapidly, one unresolved loose end remained in Sienna's mind. Before she could truly move forward, she needed to look her past in the eye one last time.
On a cold Tuesday afternoon, Sienna walked through the heavy security doors of the County Correctional Facility. She wore a tailored charcoal blazer, her hair pulled back neatly, carrying herself with an unshakeable poise.
Sitting behind the thick glass partition in the orange jumpsuit of a federal inmate was Gavin.
His once-immaculate hair was unkempt, his face hollowed by shock and panic, his fingernails bitten down to the quick. When he saw Sienna sit down across from him, he picked up the intercom receiver with trembling hands.
"Sienna!" Gavin gasped into the phone, his voice desperate and raspy. "Sienna, thank God you came! You have to talk to my lawyer! Tell them it was all my mother! She forced me, Sienna! She threatened to cut me off if I didn't go along with her plan!"
Sienna picked up her receiver, listening to his pathetic rambling without a single flicker of emotion on her face.
"Are you finished, Gavin?" she asked calmly when he finally paused for breath.
Gavin blinked, taken aback by her cold, steady tone. "Sienna... I’m your husband! Think about our baby! Think about little Elena! You can't let her grow up with her father in prison!"
"You didn't want a daughter, Gavin," Sienna said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that cut through his excuses. "You wanted a key to a fifty-million-dollar trust fund. And once you had that key, you were going to throw me into a psych ward and poison the man who raised you."
"I was desperate!" Gavin sobbed, pressing his hands against the glass. "The debts... I owed money to offshore investors! My mother said—"
"I don't care what your mother said," Sienna interrupted firmly. "I didn't come here to hear your confessions or your excuses. I came to deliver this."
She pressed a document against the glass partition.
It was a final decree of divorce, combined with a total termination of parental rights and a permanent protective order.
"Sign it, Gavin," Sienna said. "If you sign it quietly, my legal team will not pursue civil damages against the remaining personal assets in your name. If you fight it, we will drag every single one of your offshore debts into the public courtroom."
Gavin stared at the paper, his lips trembling, realizing for the first time that the gentle, quiet woman he thought he had trapped was completely beyond his control. With shaking fingers, he picked up the pen provided by the guard and signed his name on the line.

Sienna picked up her copy, slid it into her leather portfolio, and stood up.
"Goodbye, Gavin," she said, setting the receiver down forever.
